Do you need a professional wedding photographer?

Recently I had a potential client email and tell me that a friend of theirs was a sports photographer and he was going to shoot their wedding for next to nothing. I was happy for them, but also a little concerned. I have heard this many times, a friend or family member has a nice camera and offers to shoot for free or very cheap.

Here are some things to consider when hiring a wedding photographer:

Does your photographer have experience shooting weddings?

Does your photographer have the right equipment for weddings?

Does your photographer know which events take place and at what times?

Do you have backup equipment and is it the same quality as the primary equipment?

Do they have tele-photo and wide-angle lenses?

Does your photographer have experience capturing moments that you don’t want missed? ie: ring exchange, first kiss as a married couple, mom or dads tears, the moment your hubby sees you in your dress, bouquet toss, etc…

Does your photographer know how to pose you and your bridal party and make it fun to do group shots?

The list goes on and on. Just as a fashion photographer might not know how to shoot a live sporting event, a sports photographer most likely won’t have experience with the ins and outs of a 12hr wedding day. Also the equipment list for shooting a wedding is specific and a photographer for any other kind of shoot may not have everything they need for the different lighting conditions.

I have a friend that had her mother book a photographer for her, but her mother had a friend who was a horse photographer and hired him. My friend was very disappointed with her pictures.

Shooting a wedding all day takes an abundance of concentration and is hard work. Friends or Uncle so and so can often get caught up in visiting or having fun and forget about documenting one of the most important days of your life.

A hired wedding photographer will always have the documentation of your day as top priority. As a wedding photographer you are often responsible for wrangling family members and keeping the mood fun and light as not everyone is comfortable in front of the camera. Most wedding photographers have gotten very good at this and this is something to consider as well when choosing a photographer for your special day.

In a nut shell, keep these things in mind when choosing your photographer.

San Diego’s Best of Weddings

I wasn’t going to write this post because it seemed like too self promoting, but a friend said I had to and my marketing guru agreed, so here it is, in the most humble way possible.

I received a phone call from Brianna at The Knot Wedding pages magazine early last month. Brianna told me I had won “Best of San Diego Wedding Photographer”. I was very pleased about the news!!! I didn’t even know the magazine did that. (apparently they do it in one issue every year.)

She told me that they had polled brides from all over San Diego and I was voted #1!! I am very flattered and excited to get this great award.

Thank you all that supported me last year and to my Brides that voted, “you guys rock!”

I am so happy that my clients love their pictures. I work very hard to make sure everyone gets a special set of photographs of the most important day of their lives. Thank you all so much for making my dream career so possible.
